2006 season
2006 Season review So the 2006 cricket season has drawn to a close for Montbard CC and we can reflect on a successful year. We completed 3 fixtures, comprising 5 matches and after a gap in 2005 revived the very successful Tournoi. Our season started with a rare away fixture at Cern – the French-Swiss nuclear research facility close to Geneva. A party of 5 made their way down from Burgundy, along with Wellsy who supplemented our side with some local ringers. Let’s say that for the Saturday game Cern got some good batting practice, whilst Montbard can blame a tricky batting wicket (actually the surface was immaculate). On Sunday with the side’s mixed up there was a much closer game, and everyone involved saw some action. Our next match was our regular home fixture against our nearest rivals Strasbourg. After a downpour the sun miraculously broke through for the start of the match. At one stage it looked as if we might actually pull off a victory, but we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as Strasbourg once again went home victorious. Next year chaps! Next up was the reprise of the Tournoi, and what a glorious weekend was had by all. The Adastrians successfully returned to defend their very well looked after trophy, and added to it a new trophy in the form of a magnificent “Burgundy Snail”. Big hitting was the order of the day, and one of batsmen for the losing finalists- the Sub-Continents managed to hit the ball over the railway tracks. However a well measured performance from the Adastrians prevailed and they were worthy winners. Other participants were Les Ormes– a very friendly bunch from Brittany and another return for the Irish Cavalliers. Once again Dee and Steve provided a splendid spread and despite a short scare when we almost ran out of beer, plenty of alcohol was imbibed. We finished our season with a visit from a bunch of bankers from London, in the form of the Effigies. Having completed conquests around the globe in the name of cricket a stern test was to follow at La Prairie. Montbard’s fielding was sprightly and for once catches were caught, wickets were falling and Montbard looked like a proper cricket team. Eventually The Effigies posted a score of 195, which was just a little too much for Montbard whose response of 152, included a sparkling 44 from Spencer and a very assured debut from Nitin. The next day the players were split into 3 teams, each team batting and bowling once and again some great cricket was played, in the best of spirits. So as we can reflect on a thoroughly enjoyable season where we made some new friends, were reunited with some old ones and everyone enjoyed some good cricket. Now we can start to think about 2007 and the usual questions of can we get some more players, fixtures, runs etc. Our next “fixture” will be an AGM sometime before Christmas where, if Francois allows, the club funds may just subsidise a bottle of claret or three!

Reminiscences of the 2007 season
Getting our precious site hacked by a crazed Lithuanian was one mighty original way to get the ball rolling. And since then we’ve gone from strength to strength. Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration but it sounds good and isn’t too far from the truth. The cricket didn’t start of too promisingly either, as I remember. And then again maybe I’m being too harsh as our first match was away to arch-rivals Strasbourg and eight of our small pool of players managed to make the effort to get themselves up that motorway. Which was pretty encouraging really even though we lost and didn’t have a great day. It was cold, grey and dampish plus we all hated their artificial match laid over a very bumpy surface. I don’t have the score cards (Strasbourg CC have never sent them on) and my memory is not what it was so I can’t recall any individual exploits of bravado or foolhardiness. I do remember though that we were more then comprehensively beaten by 70 odd runs….
