Match Report: MCC vs. Lyon CC
Lyon arrived with only eight players but as we were nine, this was no hindrance. As one or two of us were not present for the one o’clock start (Richard P disappearing mysteriously – to look for some tables apparently – successfully too), Lyon agreed to put us in first for what was programmed to be a 35 over match. New man, Chris (19) and Andy (22) donned pads and together put on 47 good runs for the first wicket. Although Abhi (captain for the first time) fell cheaply shortly afterwards, Steve (16) batted with more authority then we’ve been used to and together with Nitin (top scorer with 27) moved the total along nicely. Despite a stop for a prolonged shower, we were finally all out for 115 in 29 overs, young George carrying his bat for 6 n.o. Jenil was Lyon’s best bowler with 3 wickets for only 7 runs in his 6 overs.
Tea was characterised by yet another downpour but, thanks to many contributors, there was plenty to enjoy even if the tea itself showed lots of early season hiccups – tea pots broken and a serious shortage of tea bags !!!!!!!
Lyon’s reply took place mostly in the wet and included another stoppage due to rain, but we whittled away commendably at their line up despite having to use a wet ball and having the run up getting more and more muddy. Andy secured the breakthrough removing both openers and thereafter wickets were shared between Chris’s off-spinners (2), Abhi’s zippers including one devastating in-swinging yorker (2), and Nitin (1). Top scorers for Lyon were Shan with 20 and Baskar who with his new bat got 17 not out. Lyon’s final total was 96 scored in only 18 overs, giving the MCC a rare (19 run) victory.
Man of the Match (voted unanimously by the jury of one) was newcomer Chris S who with his 19 runs, two wickets and a catch just pipped several other contenders including Andy and Nitin from the MCC side and Jenil and Shan from Lyon.
As usual, thanks are due to, firstly, all those who turned up, those who helped erect shelters and otherwise get things ready and those who provided nourishment for the tea-break. Muchos Gratias one and all.
